British Values

At Primrose Lane, we are committed to nurturing responsible, active citizens who understand and embody the fundamental British Values. These values are deeply woven into the fabric of our school community and underpin everything we do to prepare our pupils for life in modern Britain.

What Are British Values?

British Values include democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These principles guide our approach to teaching, learning, and personal development, helping pupils to grow into kind, ambitious, and honest individuals.

How We Promote British Values

  • Democracy: Pupils at Primrose Lane learn the importance of having a voice and making decisions collectively. Through activities like our school council and class discussions, children experience democracy in action, understanding how to listen to others and contribute positively.

  • Rule of Law: We teach pupils to understand and respect the laws that govern our society. Our behaviour policy, reinforced by clear expectations and consistent practises, helps children appreciate the importance of rules in maintaining a safe and fair community.

  • Individual Liberty: We encourage pupils to be independent thinkers who make informed choices. Our nurturing environment supports children to take risks in their learning, express their ideas confidently, and develop resilience.

  • Mutual Respect and Tolerance: Kindness is at the heart of Primrose Lane. We celebrate diversity and teach pupils to respect and value people from all backgrounds and cultures. Through our curriculum and daily interactions, children learn to appreciate different perspectives and build harmonious relationships.

To ensure consistency and depth, we adopt a half-termly whole school focus on a specific British Value. This approach allows every pupil, from Reception through to Year 6, to engage with the value in a meaningful way over an extended period. During each half term, assemblies, class activities, and reflection sessions are aligned to explore the chosen value in various contexts, reinforcing its importance in everyday life.

This structured focus supports pupils in making connections between the value and their own experiences, encouraging them to reflect on how it shapes their behaviour and relationships within school and the wider community.

Where appropriate we use carefully selected stories to support our pupils understanding of the British Values. We carefully select high quality texts that are engaging and support thoughtful discussion and reflection about the values in action.

Our children can talk confidently about the British Values and why they are important. Here are some comments from pupil voice:

"British values are important because it makes people kinder to each other"

"Democracy is important because it means everyone has their chance to have their say"

"We get to be democratic in school in lots of way such as voting for the school council and in class for things such as our star in the jar reward"

" The rule of law is very important as it keeps us safe"
