RE at Primrose Lane

At Primrose Lane Primary School, we believe that Religious Education (RE) plays a crucial role in nurturing our pupils' understanding of the diverse world around them. Aligned with our school's vision to instil kindness, develop independent and resilient learners, and foster curiosity, our RE curriculum aims to broaden pupils' perspectives, encourage tolerance, and contribute to their development as positive, participating citizens.

The key aims of our RE curriculum are to:

  1. Enable pupils to develop a broad and balanced understanding of religions and worldviews, exploring their commonalities and diversity.
  2. Cultivate critical thinking skills, helping pupils to tackle difficult questions within a safe but challenging context.
  3. Nurture pupils' spiritual awareness and sensitivity to the questions and challenges that different views and cultures can present.
  4. Contribute to the development of pupils as positive, participating citizens of the world, with a strong sense of their own place and journey through life.

At Primrose Lane we use the newly agreed Leeds Syllabus, Believing and Belonging. This RE curriculum is designed to provide pupils with a solid foundation in the beliefs, practices, and traditions of Christianity, world faiths, and non-religious worldviews. By exploring these diverse perspectives, pupils will develop a deeper understanding of the common threads that bind us together as human beings, as well as an appreciation for the richness of our differences.

Throughout their learning journey, pupils will engage in critical analysis, problem-solving, and the development of informed and resilient responses to misunderstanding, stereotyping, and division. They will be encouraged to ask challenging questions, consider multiple viewpoints, and cultivate their own spiritual and ethical understanding.

The curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure that pupils' learning builds upon their prior knowledge and skills. In Key Stage 1, the focus is on developing a foundational understanding of the major world religions, with an emphasis on Christianity and the local community. As pupils progress through Key Stage 2, the curriculum expands to explore a wider range of faiths and worldviews, encouraging deeper analysis and the application of learning to new contexts.

Children gain a deeper understanding of the religion studied through handling artefacts, using imaginative play or drama, responding to images, games, stories, art, music and dance, meeting visitors from religious communities, making visits to religious places of worship where possible and where not, making use of videos and the internet, taking part in whole school events, participating in moments of quiet reflection, using ICT to further explore religion and belief globally, comparing religions and worldviews through discussion, debating and communicating religious beliefs and philosophical ideas and asking ultimate questions posed by these.

RE at Primrose Lane

Here are some photos of the RE games that Y5 made to teach Y4 about Sikhism.
It was a great session and really showed off what we have learnt about Sikhism this half term.

Wider Impact

The RE curriculum at Primrose Lane Primary School is designed to have a far-reaching impact on our pupils' development. By fostering an appreciation for diversity, cultivating critical thinking skills, and nurturing spiritual awareness, we aim to equip our pupils with the knowledge, understanding, and dispositions necessary to thrive as responsible, engaged, and empathetic citizens in an increasingly interconnected world.

In the UK, parents have the right to withdraw their children from RE on the grounds that they wish to make their own provision. If this is something that you are considering please contact the headteacher, Mrs Lara Bailey to discuss further.
