Our School Intent

At Primrose Lane Primary School, we believe that learning a modern foreign language is a vital component of a well-rounded education. Our MFL curriculum is designed to equip our pupils with the confidence, resilience, vocabulary, and cultural awareness needed to engage in meaningful conversations in a foreign language. By doing so, we aim to increase our children's future opportunities and develop their role as global citizens.

Given the recent cessation of the long-standing Mandarin partnership with Boston Spa Academy, we have chosen to introduce French as our new modern foreign language. This decision was made strategically, as France is a country visited by many of our pupils, and French is spoken by more people outside of France than within it. French is also a common language in various international fields, including business, fashion, and the arts. Our intention is for our pupils to leave Primrose Lane with a love of languages and an appreciation for French life and culture. The knowledge and skills gained through language learning will not only enhance their future opportunities but also support their development as kind, independent, and resilient individuals who embrace diversity and engage with the wider world.

The implementation of our French curriculum is designed to support our less experienced French-speaking staff members. The Classroom Secrets scheme we have chosen provides clear guidance, correct pronunciation through audio clips, and a well-sequenced progression of vocabulary and language skills. This allows our teachers to confidently deliver high-quality MFL lessons, ensuring that our pupils receive a consistent and effective learning experience.

All pupils at Primrose Lane will begin their MFL journey by learning about French culture, numbers, the alphabet, and basic French greetings. This foundational knowledge will provide a solid starting point for our pupils, regardless of their previous language experience, and will set them up for success as they progress through the curriculum.

French Conversation

French Fun with Amelie!

We had a fantastic time in our recent French revision sessions, helped by a very special guest—Amelie, who is bilingual in English and French! Amelie joined us to support our conversation practice and brought a real sense of fun to our learning.

Together, we played games, revised key vocabulary, and practised holding simple conversations in French. Amelie was really impressed with how confident we were, especially our excellent pronunciation and wide vocabulary. Très bien, Year 6!

French Conversation: Shopping

We have been working hard to learn how to shop 'til we drop - in French!

Things get a bit complicated when the item is plural e.g. sweets, but we  worked really hard and our conversation skills are coming on well!

Below are a couple of videos of the type of vocabulary we have been learning this week in French.

French - Weather Vocabulary

Year 6 had a fantastic time learning all about the weather in French!
The children threw themselves into learning new vocabulary, focusing particularly on accurate accent pronunciation — and they did brilliantly! We took our learning outside, dressing up and role-playing different weather scenarios, which brought the language to life in a fun and memorable way.

Teamwork was a real highlight of the sessions, with pupils supporting one another to practise their speaking and listening skills. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and it was wonderful to see how much they remembered.

The quality of their written work was equally impressive. The progress they've made is fantastic — bravo, tout le monde!

Here are some photos of our role play, using props as clues to help us act out different types of weather. Enjoy!

Key Stage 2 are really enjoying learning French! Practising speaking French to one another is really fun and our confidence is growing week on week. Here are some examples of conversations as well as a couple of songs we like to sing to improve our pronunciation of the French alphabet and numbers.
