Design & Technology (D&T)
‘Good buildings come from good people, and all problems are solved by good design.’
Stephen Gardiner
The National Curriculum – purpose of study for Design and Technology
‘Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and wellbeing of the nation.’
Our Curriculum Intent
At Primrose Lane, our Design and Technology (DT) curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, creativity and problem-solving in all children. We want our pupils to become resourceful, innovative and practical learners who are able to design, make and evaluate products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts.
Through a carefully sequenced and progressive curriculum, we ensure that children develop the technical knowledge, skills and vocabulary needed to create high-quality outcomes. They learn to use tools and materials safely and effectively, applying knowledge from across the curriculum including mathematics, science, computing and art.
Our setting allows every child to engage in meaningful hands-on experiences, where individual ideas are valued, and collaboration is encouraged. Pupils are taught to evaluate their own work and the work of others critically and constructively, understanding that design is a process of improvement and innovation.
We aim for all children to leave primary school with the confidence and capability to take risks, problem-solve, and think creatively—skills that will prepare them for the technological and design-rich world around them. Our Design and Technology curriculum meets the requirements of the National Curriculum by providing students with opportunities to use their creative skills and imagination to design, make and evaluate products. Through the use of real-life products as learning tools, students are encouraged to think creatively and problem-solve as part of the design process. This approach ensures that students develop the technical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
